Scanning The Globe

State-of-the-art body scanners were recently installed at my city airport!  Though many folks have a problem with the technology … I willingly embrace it!  I’ve grown weary of a routine that goes something like this:

Me to TSA – both of my hips have been replaced.
TSA (shouting) – we need a female assist over here!

I travel more than several times a year and could probably recite, verbatim, the script TSA females use as they pat me down!  What a relief to bypass those standard metal detectors, the endless patting and posturing ~ the hassle.

The new scanners feature millimeter wave technology … not the peek-a-boo technology that sparked public outrage a few years ago.  Tiny radio waves are bounced off a person’s body in search of irregularities.  No pictures ~ just generic outlines of a human ~ with any abnormalities marked on the outline with a yellow box.

The machine picks up on metallic and non-metallic items, from cell phones and belt buckles to the more ‘nefarious’ objects.

Scanners are not for everyone, for me they facilitate the move through security .. others may continue using the standard metal detectors.

It’s all good.  That is, when planes aren't overbooked, babies don't cry, departures and arrivals are in sync and passengers actually smile!

If I looked that good to the operator I would insist on going through several times. I bet you did that too!

I like your highheels in the x-ray. When someone first sent me that x-ray, I thought it looked like you, so I'm glad you've practically admitted it.

Lucky me, I almost never fly.

When flying was glamorous, I was too! Now I wear sweat pants and slip on shoes, carry a blanket and pillow and hand sanitzer. I usually have an aisle or window not far behind first class. For me an anxiety filled time of any flight is the wait to see if or who will fill the middle seat. The second best time of any flight is when that middle seat remains empty and the door is pulled closed. The first best time of any flight is when the landing gear hit the tarmak and we are safely on the ground. I ALWAYS clap for the pilot - and I never leave a plane without thanking the crew.

Hi Helen, I'm here from Chris at Enchanted Oak. I always manage to bleep when I go through scanners, even after I've removed offending items. It's not the metal in my bones or teeth, just bad luck. Eventually I get through but as I don't travel as often as you it's not such a hassle. Thanks for the news on this new scanning technology It sounds good to me.

I hate flying, I hate airports, with or without scanners, which always pick up on the bars and screws in my ankle.

A Happy New Year to you!

Once I've checked my luggage in I love the whole airport thing on my way there, and hate it with a passion on the way back! We have those machines in Manchester UK too!
Just been to Jamie's place, knockout photos, thanks for sharing .
Happy New Year!

Great post! I travel a lot too and I also prefer the quicker moving line through security with no one pawing me!

Happy New year!

This is good to know! I have been wondering about those new scanners, and while I haven't flown in a few years, I had some trepidation about these new things. Now I won't have to worry.
